There existed, for many years, a wonderful book store in the Bay Area called A Clean Well Lighted Place for Books. Named after a collection of Hemingway's short stories (titled Clean Well Lighted Place), it was perfectly located in San Francisco's Opera Plaza on Van Ness Avenue. Perfect because of the abundance of good restaurants and cafes in the neighbourhood....one could pick up a book, then linger over a good meal while reading. Sadly, due to diminished foot traffic in the area and a sagging economy, the store was sold last year to a private discount chain.
This was just one out of many excellent privately owned bookstores in the Bay Area (San Francisco, Berkley, Oakland, Marin County, Silicon Valley). Delightful places with comfortable armchairs sprinkled here and there, where one could always find fellow book lovers ready and willing to discuss their lastest finds.
Now I live in a small community where there's not a private bookstore to be found....the last one we had was a second hand bookstore that couldn't hang on for even a year. Yes, I do enjoy going into Barnes & Noble...but the feeling is just not the same. Too bright, too sterile, not enough eccentrics hanging around.
So, can we talk books here, my friends?
I know that there are several book related groups here at Newsvine....but this is chatting about books....when you don't have the time or inclination to write an entire book review.
What do you have at your bedside table? Or coffee table? Or bathroom? Or in your purse, rucksack, backpocket?
What are you reading? Would you recommend it? What do you like or dislike about it? Do you have a book you're considering, and want to chat about it before buying?
Jump into the discussion, my friends. All genres embraced here.
